Training School: COMICSNeT – Climate, Outreach, Migration, Intersectionality, New Technologies in/through Comics Studies (CECS – Universidade do Minho, 9-10th September 2024)
The iCOn-MICs research project ‘Investigation on Comics and Graphic Novels from the Iberian Cultural Area’ is pleased to organise the Training School at Universidade do Minho, titled ‘COMICSNeT – Climate, Outreach, Migration, Intersectionality, New Technologies in/through Comics Studies’ (you can find the program HERE)
This training school aims at gathering experts in field of Comics Studies and doctoral, postdoctoral or other researchers and professionals interested in deepening their understanding of how comics’ interdisciplinarity, porosity and multimodality can be employed as a tool to be included in research projects in the fields of the humanities and social sciences, regarding the Ibero-American context and beyond.
In particular, the objective is to take stock of the recent studies showing graphic narratives’ and the comics medium’s capacity to represent and problematize multifaceted phenomena that punctuate our contemporary societies. The school will focus on how methodological approaches deriving from the humanities and social sciences are enriched by, and in turn cast a light on, the intersection of comics and issues such as climate change (Sidney 2020; Puchner 2022; Baile López, Caraballo and Rovira-Collado 2022), migration flows (Davies and Rifkind 2020; Serrano 2021), gender-related issues (Goldberg 20017; Chute 2010; Cox 2021), the rise and massive spread of new technologies (Berry 2015; Kashtan 2018).

The cover letter should highlight the applicant’s main research interests and their motivation for participating in the training school. Accepted trainees will be asked to prepare a presentation (approximately 15 minutes each, to be shared during the second day of the school) discussing how comics relate to the methodological approach that they are following (or intend to follow) in their research in the social sciences or humanities.
The Training School will be free of charge for accepted participants. iCOn-MICs will provide financial support covering for travel and accommodation expenses, paid as reimbursement, to a limited number of accepted applicants.
